Bocca Verita

The Mouth of Truth

La Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) was sculpted in approximately 100 B.C. in Rome. It was originally a cistern cover in the ancient temple dedicated to Hercules. In 1632 it was moved to the location where it stands today. Traditional lore holds that if you speak a lie while your hand is in the mouth, it will be bitten off. What better emblem for our masculinity at the portal of the unconscious? We are all invited to plumb our depths and speak our truth as we search ever more profoundly within ourselves.
